FULL CIRCLE: Bonny's Story

An Environmental Cooking Educator’s Journey to Empowerment and Community Impact

When I first arrived in Canada as an immigrant from Taiwan in 1994, I faced the same challenges many newcomers do: the language barrier, adapting to a new culture, and finding my place in a foreign land. Cooking, however, was the one constant that helped me feel at home. Growing up cooking with my mom, which was her love language, I learned how food could bridge gaps and build communities.

My professional journey has taken many interesting turns before arriving on my current path as an EcoCooks’ Environmental Cooking Educator. The opportunity to make a direct impact in our community through introducing local youth and their families to cooking for the planet has been incredibly rewarding.

This past summer, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Kelowna Community Resources to run EcoCooks workshops for newcomer youth. The workshops introduced the youth to climate change, carbon footprints, and how to prepare simple, nutritious meals that are both environmentally friendly and culturally inclusive. Many youth reflected that they had enjoyed practicing cooking skills, trying new foods, as well as meeting new friends.

This collaboration was a full circle moment for me, as 2024 marked my 30th year since arriving in Canada as an immigrant youth myself. This was a way for me to bring my own personal experience and engage with the youth in a special and meaningful way.

Cooking is more than just a skill—it is a way to connect with our roots and nature, a way to embrace both traditional recipes and the fusion of new influences that come with life in Canada. Cooking can be a powerful tool for expressing identity, building confidence, and empowerment to make a difference.

For me, this work is more than a teaching job—it’s a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people who are navigating their own journeys on this beautiful planet. Seeing their enthusiasm and smiles reaffirms my belief in the power of education to inspire change. I have come to appreciate the strength and resilience of these young learners, as I’m reminded of my own similar experiences at that age. Their curiosity and commitment give me hope that different generations can work together - to create a positive change, a better planet, and build a more inclusive, informed community.
